A Guide To Modeling Coastal Morphology

by Dano Roelvink, release date 2012, A Guide To Modeling Coastal Morphology Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Guide To Modeling Coastal Morphology books, Process-based morphodynamic modelling is one of the relatively new tools at the disposal of coastal scientists, engineers and managers. On paper, it offers the possibility to analyse morphological processes and to investigate the effects of various measures one might consider to alleviate some problems. For these to be applied in practice, a model should be relatively straightforward to set up. It should be accurate enough to represent the details of interest, it should run long enough and robustly to see the real effects happen, and the physical processes represented in such a way that the sediment generally goes in the right direction at the right rate. Next, practitioners must be able to judge if the patterns and outcomes of the model are realistic and finally, translate these colour pictures and vector plots to integrated parameters that are relevant to the client or end user. In a nutshell, this book provides an in-depth review of ways to model coastal processes, including many hands-on exercises.

by Ping Wang, release date 2011-01-01, The Proceedings Of The Coastal Sediments 2011 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Proceedings Of The Coastal Sediments 2011 books, This proceedings contains nearly 200 papers on cutting-edge research presented at the seventh international Symposium on Coastal Engineering and Science of Coastal Sediment Processes, held May 26, 2011, in Miami, Florida, USA. This technical specialty conference was devoted to promoting an interdisciplinary exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge among researchers in the fields of coastal engineering, geology, oceanography, and related disciplines, with a theme of bringing together theory and practice. Focusing on the physical aspects of sediment processes in various coastal environments, this three-volume conference proceedings provides findings from the latest research and newest engineering applications. Session topics cover a wide range including barrier-island morphodynamics and evolution, beach nourishment and shore protection, coastal dunes, cohesive sediment transport, field and laboratory measurements of sediment transport processes and numerical modeling, gravel transport, large-scale and long-term coastal changes, LiDAR and remote sensing, longshore and cross-shore sediment transport, marsh and wetlands, regional sediment management, river deltas, sea-level changes, shelf and sand bodies, shoreline changes, tidal inlets and navigation channels. A special session on recent research findings at the Northern Gulf of Mexico is also included.

A Guide To The Geology Of Delaware S Coastal Environments

by John Christian Kraft, release date 1971, A Guide To The Geology Of Delaware S Coastal Environments Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Guide To The Geology Of Delaware S Coastal Environments books, The low-lying Delaware coast includes the highly varied geomorphic elements of a major estuary; highlands undergoing erosion; spits; dunes, marshes; and a lagoon-barrier shoreline. Vertical sediment sequences and geomorphic patterns as interpreted in this study should form useful models in deciphering paleogeography an sedimentary processes of coastal change. The three major elements of coastal change identified include: (1) the relative rise in sea level (now proceeding at a rate of approximately 1/2 foot per century), (2) coastal erosion and deposition processes, and (3) the resultant sequences of sedimentary lithosomes which reveal the past history of coastal change. The physical elements of the coastal geology are illustrated with photographs comparing details on the surface and from the air. Many diagrams and cross sections interpret and project and structural information obtained in field surveys. (Author).

The Chicago Guide To Landing A Job In Academic Biology

by C. Ray Chandler, release date 2008-09-15, The Chicago Guide To Landing A Job In Academic Biology Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Chicago Guide To Landing A Job In Academic Biology books, The Chicago Guide to Landing a Job in Academic Biology is an indispensable guide for graduate students and post-docs as they enter that domain red in tooth and claw: the job market. An academic career in the biological sciences typically demands well over a decade of technical training. So it’s ironic that when a scholar reaches the most critical stage in that career—the search for a job following graduate work—he or she receives little or no formal preparation. Instead, students are thrown into the job market with only cursory guidance on how to search for and land a position. Now there’s help. Carefully, clearly, and with a welcome sense of humor, The Chicago Guide to Landing a Job in Academic Biology leads graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through the perils and rewards of their first job search. The authors—who collectively have for decades mentored students and served on hiring committees—have honed their advice in workshops at biology meetings across the country. The resulting guide covers everything from how to pack an overnight bag without wrinkling a suit to selecting the right job to apply for in the first place. The authors have taken care to make their advice useful to all areas of academic biology—from cell biology and molecular genetics to evolution and ecology—and they give tips on how applicants can tailor their approaches to different institutions from major research universities to small private colleges. With jobs in the sciences ever more difficult to come by, The Chicago Guide to Landing a Job in Academic Biology is designed to help students and post-docs navigate the tricky terrain of an academic job search—from the first year of a graduate program to the final negotiations of a job offer.
