Assessment Standards For School Mathematics

by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, release date 1995, Assessment Standards For School Mathematics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Assessment Standards For School Mathematics books, This document was created because of the need for new assessment strategies and practices to be developed to enable teachers and others to assess students' performance in a manner that reflects the NCTM's reform vision for school mathematics. Instead of assuming that the purpose of assessment is to rank students on a particular trait, the new approach assumes that high public expectations can be set that every student can strive for and achieve, that different performances can and will meet agreed-on expectations, and that teachers can be fair and consistent judges of diverse student performances. The first sections of the document discuss six mathematics assessment standards: (1) The Mathematics Standard, (2) The Learning Standard, (3) The Equity Standard, (4) The Openness Standard, (5) The Inferences Standard, and (6) The Coherence Standard. The use of the assessment standards is then discussed in the context of different purposes such as monitoring students' progress, making instructional decisions, evaluating students' achievement, and evaluating programs. The next section discusses what should happen next with regard to mathematical assessment. The document concludes with a glossary and a selected assessment bibliography with 116 citations. Contains 28 references. (MKR)

Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 3 5

by J. D. Gawronski, release date 2005, Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 3 5 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 3 5 books, The sample assessment items in this volume are sorted according to the strands of number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and data analysis and probability. Because one goal of assessment is to determine students’ abilities to communicate mathematically, the writing team suggests ways to extend or modify multiple-choice and short-answer items to elicit students’ thinking. The writers also present various rubrics as examples of how teachers might score extended-response questions. When students know in advance how their answers will be evaluated, they will strive to meet expected criteria. The hope is that teachers will find this material useful as they plumb their students’ thinking and consider how students’ responses can guide their instructional decisions.

by Betty Travis, release date 2005, Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 9 12 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 9 12 books, This volume is intended to supply teachers with sample assessment items that produce an accurate picture of their students’ thinking, to guide teachers’ instructional decisions and to serve as models for creating original assessment items. The items are selected or modified from state, national and international assessments; textbooks; private collections of mathematics educators and originally written problems. The types of items include multiple choice, short response and extended response. All items either require students to explain their answers or ask comparative questions among answer choices. Some items are scaffolded so that all students have access to them; only a few items require the use of a calculator. Selected samples of student work either exemplify a correct response or typify certain categories of student errors.

by DeAnn Huinker, release date 2006, Mathematics Assessment Sampler Prekindergarten Grade 2 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mathematics Assessment Sampler Prekindergarten Grade 2 books, This sampler presents assessment tasks that are appropriate for use with students from age 4 to age 8. The book provides teachers of primary grades mathematics with examples of assessment tasks that reflect the various ways assessments can be used prior to, during and following mathematics instruction. Teachers can then consider the potential of these tasks to uncover the mathematical understandings of their students for the purpose of planning further instruction. Each task can be altered by changing the context, breaking the task into subparts, limiting the scope or complexity of the task, or extending the task to provide more of a challenge or enhance the depth of understanding being assessed.

by Beth Cole, release date 2005, Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 6 8 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mathematics Assessment Sampler Grades 6 8 books, This collection of sample assessment items contains items compiled from many sources, including state and provincial assessments, sorted into the strands of number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement and data analysis and probability. Because students are assessed on standardised tests with multiple-choice items, the writing team chose samples of such items as well as explanations for those problems designed to give students opportunities to demonstrate their skills and understanding. “Teacher notes” to suggest ideas for making multiple-choice items more meaningful and a variety of rubrics, are also included. In addition, the professional development chapter is designed to help in-service and preservice teachers understand and use levels of complexity for particular problems, use and adapt multiple-choice items, use assessment tasks as an in-service topic, employ scoring rubrics, use technology in assessment and design their own assessment items.
