The Jewish Novel In The Ancient World

by Lawrence M. Wills, release date 2015-03-11, The Jewish Novel In The Ancient World Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Jewish Novel In The Ancient World books, Lawrence M. Wills here traces the literary evolution of popular Jewish narratives written during the period 200 BCE-100 CE. In many ways, these narratives were similar to Greek and Roman novels of the same era, as well as to popular novels of indigenous peoples within the Roman Empire. Yet, as a group, they demonstrated a variety of novelistic innovations: the inclusion of adventurous episodes, passages of description and of dialogue, concern with psychological motivation, and the introduction of female characters. Wills focuses on five novels: Greek Esther, Greek ,Daniel, Judith, Tobit, and Joseph and Aseneth.. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical works, he delineates the techniques and motifs of the Jewish novel, shows how the genre both initiated and distanced itself from nonfictional prose such as historical and philosophical writing, discusses its relation to Greco-Roman romance, and describes the social conditions governing its emergence and reception. Wills also places the novels in historical context, situating them between the Hebrew Bible, on the one hand, and subsequent developments in Jewish and Christian literature on the other. Wills sees the Jewish novel as a popular form of writing that provided amusement for an expanding audience of Jewish entrepreneurs, merchants, and bureaucrats. In an important sense, he maintains, it was a product of the "novelistic impulse": the impulse to transfer oral stories to a written medium to reach a more literate audience.

Download Etiquette And Entertaining Classic Reprint books, Excerpt from Etiquette and Entertaining Introductions are, Of course, necessary at a dinner-party. The guests have no choice in the matter. If you were sent in to dinner with your bitterest enemy you could not refuse his escort neither could he Object to escorting you. There would have to be a truce during dinner - even if it were'for that occasion only! Introductions should 'always be made at a dance. Permission is not always asked Of the lady in this instance, as it is assumed that She will be pleased to have partners presented to her. On the other hand, a ballzroom introduc tion does not count for much afterwards - it is quite optional whether the lady recognises the gentleman next time she meets him out. It is more graceful for her to do SO (personally, I think it is rather horrid Of a woman to dance with a man one night and cut him the next), but she is free to drop the acquaintance if she desires to do so. They are appropriate for morning, afternoon, and evening and for all assemblies require little oversight from the hostess, and may be as Simple or as elaborate as is desired. Once seated with a new, crisp pack of cards before them, the guests will entertain themselves. Euchre is still a reigning favorite for progressive play, though in certain localities it has been supplanted by Whist - Bridge, Duplicate, Progressive or Drive - Cinch or Pedro, Five Hundred, sixty-three, and others. Euchre is sociable and easily mastered, and, as almost everyone who plays cards at all is familiar with it, its popularity is not likely to wane. There seems to be a sociability in six-handed games that is rapidly bringing them into favor. It has been said that an evening at six-handed Euchre makes old friends out of chance acquaintances. Five and seven-handed Euchre are also played, but not progressively. The score is kept at each table, and a favor given to the player having highest score at each table. Southern History On Screen

by Bryan M. Jack, release date 2018-11-01, Southern History On Screen Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Southern History On Screen books, Hollywood films have been influential in the portrayal and representation of race relations in the South and how African Americans are cinematically depicted in history, from The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Gone with the Wind (1939) to The Help (2011) and 12 Years a Slave (2013). With an ability to reach mass audiences, films represent the power to influence and shape the public's understanding of our country's past, creating lasting images -- both real and imagined -- in American culture. In Southern History on Screen: Race and Rights, 1976--2016, editor Bryan Jack brings together essays from an international roster of scholars to provide new critical perspectives on Hollywood's relationships between historical films, Southern history, identity, and the portrayal of Jim Crow--era segregation. This collection analyzes films through the lens of religion, politics, race, sex, and class, building a comprehensive look at the South as seen on screen. By illuminating depictions of the southern belle in Gone with the Wind, the religious rhetoric of southern white Christians and the progressive identity of the "white heroes" in A Time to Kill (1996) and Mississippi Burning (1988), as well as many other archetypes found across films, this book explores the intersection between film, historical memory, and southern identity.

Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles

by Martin Gardner, release date 1986-10, Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles books, Playing with mathematical riddles can be an intriguing and fun-filled pastime — as popular science writer Martin Gardner proves in this entertaining collection. Puzzlists need only an elementary knowledge of math and a will to resist looking up the answer before trying to solve a problem. Written in a light and witty style, Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles is a mixture of old and new riddles, grouped into sections that cover a variety of mathematical topics: money, speed, plane and solid geometry, probability, topology, tricky puzzles, and more. The probability section, for example, points out that everything we do, everything that happens around us, obeys the laws of probability; geometry puzzles test our ability to think pictorially and often, in more than one dimension; while topology, among the "youngest and rowdiest branches of modern geometry," offers a glimpse into a strange dimension where properties remain unchanged, no matter how a figure is twisted, stretched, or compressed. Clear and concise comments at the beginning of each section explain the nature and importance of the math needed to solve each puzzle. A carefully explained solution follows each problem. In many cases, all that is needed to solve a puzzle is the ability to think logically and clearly, to be "on the alert for surprising, off-beat angles...that strange hidden factor that everyone else had overlooked." Fully illustrated, this engaging collection will appeal to parents and children, amateur mathematicians, scientists, and students alike, and may, as the author writes, make the reader "want to study the subject in earnest" and explains "some of the inviting paths that wind away from the problems into lusher areas of the mathematical jungle." 65 black-and-white illustrations.

Angel Flight Mid Atlantic

by Suzanne Rhodes, release date 2008-02-18, Angel Flight Mid Atlantic Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Angel Flight Mid Atlantic books, In 1972, two pilots—one a federal career engineer, the other the pastor of a prominent church in Washington, D.C.—discovered a common passion for flying airplanes and serving people. One day over lunch, the men conceived a flight plan, one that would undergo many changes before becoming Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic, as it is known today. Ed Boyer of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Dr. Louis Evans, pastor of the National Presbyterian Church, discussed how to pool their interests and qualifications. From its beginnings as a charitable shuttle service for religious leaders and dignitaries, to full-scale charitable air ambulance operations, to Angel Flights for ambulatory patients, the initial vision has grown into a network of over 1,500 volunteer pilots in the Mid-Atlantic region who use their private planes to fly people in need to specialized treatment. Angel Flight coordinates missions of mercy from its offices in Virginia Beach, helping patients to find “the shortest distance between home and hope.”
