Death And Closure In Biblical Narrative

by Walter B. Crouch, release date 2000, Death And Closure In Biblical Narrative Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Death And Closure In Biblical Narrative books, Inherent in every story is a view of death that reflects the human struggle of ending well, a Freudian thanatos inscribed within narrative. As a story draws to a close, the view of death found within the structure of the story's narrative will influence the ending that is produced. To examine the view of death and the closing strategies employed within a narrative, this study proposes a literary category called «narrative mortality.» Narrative mortality compares the degree of finality given to death with the amount of closure the reader experiences within the narrative. The narrative mortality of three differing biblical stories are studied within this work: The Gospel of John, the Book of Job, and the Book of Jonah. Each story employs a differing rhetorical strategy that reflects its own unique view of death and narrative closure.

1 Samuel As Christian Scripture

by Stephen B Chapman , release date 2016, 1 Samuel As Christian Scripture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download 1 Samuel As Christian Scripture books, In this theological commentary on 1 Samuel, Stephen Chapman probes the tension between religious conviction and political power through the characters of Saul and David. Saul, Chapman argues, embodies civil religion, a form of belief that is ultimately captive to the needs of the state. David, on the other hand, stands for a vital religious faith that can support the state while still maintaining a theocentric freedom. Chapman offers a robustly theological and explicitly Christian reading of 1 Samuel, carefully studying the received Hebrew text to reveal its internal logic. He shows how the book's artful narrative explores the theological challenge presented by the emergence of the monarchy in ancient Israel. Chapman also illuminates the reception of the David tradition, both in the Bible and in later history: even while David as king becomes a potent symbol for state power, his biblical portrait continues to destabilize civil religion.

Biblical Narrative And Palestine S History

by Thomas L. Thompson, release date 2014-09-11, Biblical Narrative And Palestine S History Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biblical Narrative And Palestine S History books, Modern biblical scholarship's commitment to the historical-critical method in its efforts to write a history of Israel has created the central and unavoidable problem of writing an objective and critical history of Palestine through the biblical literature with the methods of Biblical Archaeology. 'Biblical Narrative and Palestine's History' brings together key essays on historical method and the archaeology and history of Palestine. The essays employ comparative and formalistic techniques to illuminate the allegorical and mythical in Old Testament narrative traditions from Genesis to Nehemiah. In so doing, the volume presents a detailed review of central and radical changes in both our understanding of biblical traditions and the archaeology and history of Palestine. The study offers an analysis of Biblical narrative as rooted in ancient Near Eastern literature since the Bronze Age.

A Scientific Theology Theory

by Alister E. McGrath, release date 2003, A Scientific Theology Theory Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Scientific Theology Theory books, Written by Alister McGrath, one of the world's best-known theologians, these volumes present the most extended and systematic exploration of the relation between Christian theology and the natural sciences ever undertaken. Thoroughly ecumenical in approach, A Scientific Theology is a significant work for Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant readers. Each volume is marked throughout by a sustained critical engagement with the history and philosophy of the natural sciences and by a passionate commitment to the legitimacy of theology as an academic discipline. Volume 3 provides a fresh evaluation of the origins and place of theory in Christian theology. Dealing with the question of how reality is represented in Christian theology and the natural sciences, theory is understood as a response to experienced reality, a "communal beholding of reality." Against those who might favor a "non-dogmatic" Christianity, McGrath argues that the Christian community is under an intellectual obligation to give an account of what it corporately "beholds." The many theoretical issues addressed in this volume include the manner in which closure is secured in theological theorizing, the problem of reductionism in theoretical analysis, the explanatory dimensions of theology, the implications of the stratification of reality for its representation, the place of metaphysics in Christian theology, and the nature of revelation itself.
