Evidence Of Greek Philosophical Concepts In The Writings Of Ephrem The Syrian

by Ute Possekel, release date 1999, Evidence Of Greek Philosophical Concepts In The Writings Of Ephrem The Syrian Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Evidence Of Greek Philosophical Concepts In The Writings Of Ephrem The Syrian books, Ephrem the Syrian (d. 373) has often been taken to represent an unhellenized Semitic form of Christianity in unbroken continuity with the tradition of Jesus and the apostles. This somewhat romanticized view of Ephrem disregards the fact that Syria had been subject to Greek influence since its conquest centuries earlier by Alexander the Great. Ephrem's own writings however frequently betray a familiarity with Greek philosophical ideas. This book first introduces Ephrem's intellectual context and his attitude towards learning. It then systematically analyzes parallels between Ephrem and Greek writers on the subjects of atomism, space, on corporeals, vision, and the four elements. This study thereby demonstrates that Ephrem draws not only on Semitic cultural traditions, but also on Greek philosophical thought.

Allegorical Readers And Cultural Revision In Ancient Alexandria

by David Dawson, release date 1991-12-02, Allegorical Readers And Cultural Revision In Ancient Alexandria Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Allegorical Readers And Cultural Revision In Ancient Alexandria books, Allegorical readings of literary or religious texts always begin as counterreadings, starting with denial or negation, challenging the literal sense: "You have read the text this way, but I will read it differently." David Dawson insists that ancient allegory is best understood not simply as a way of reading texts, but as a way of using non-literal readings to reinterpret culture and society. Here he describes how some ancient pagan, Jewish, and Christian interpreters used allegory to endorse, revise, and subvert competing Christian and pagan world views. This reassessment of allegorical reading emphasizes socio-cultural contexts rather than purely formal literary features, opening with an analysis of the pagan use of etymology and allegory in the Hellenistic world and pagan opposition to both techniques. The remainder of the book presents three Hellenistic religious writers who each typify distinctive models of allegorical interpretation: the Jewish exegete Philo, the Christian Gnostic Valentinus, and the Christian Platonist Clement. The study engages issues in the fields of classics, history of Christianity and Hellenistic Judaism, literary criticism and theory, and more broadly, critical theory and cultural criticism.

Hermeneutik Der Gleichnisse Jesu

by Ruben Zimmermann, release date 2008, Hermeneutik Der Gleichnisse Jesu Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hermeneutik Der Gleichnisse Jesu books, English summary: Whereas previous methods of understanding Jesus' parables were strictly separated according to history, literature and the aesthetics of reception, the authors of this book attempt to look at the various approaches together from the perspective of hermeneutics. Although the individual contributors to the volume do represent different perspectives, the connection between the various approaches can be perceived in this collection of essays, which are based on papers presented while working on the Compendium of the Parables of Jesus (edited by R. Zimmermann, Gutersloh 2007) during the Conference on Parables in Bielefeld in October 2005 and February 2006. In their articles, the authors seek to establish a dialogue with American research on parables.
