Faithful Bodies

by Heather Miyano Kopelson, release date 2016-04-05, Faithful Bodies Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Faithful Bodies books, In the seventeenth-century English Atlantic, religious beliefs and practices played a central role in creating racial identity. English Protestantism provided a vocabulary and structure to describe and maintain boundaries between insider and outsider. In this path-breaking study, Heather Miyano Kopelson peels back the layers of conflicting definitions of bodies and competing practices of faith in the puritan Atlantic, demonstrating how the categories of “white,” “black,” and “Indian” developed alongside religious boundaries between “Christian” and “heathen” and between “Catholic” and “Protestant.” Faithful Bodies focuses on three communities of Protestant dissent in the Atlantic World: Bermuda, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. In this “puritan Atlantic,” religion determined insider and outsider status: at times Africans and Natives could belong as long as they embraced the Protestant faith, while Irish Catholics and English Quakers remained suspect. Colonists’ interactions with indigenous peoples of the Americas and with West Central Africans shaped their understandings of human difference and its acceptable boundaries. Prayer, religious instruction, sexual behavior, and other public and private acts became markers of whether or not blacks and Indians were sinning Christians or godless heathens. As slavery became law, transgressing people of color counted less and less as sinners in English puritans’ eyes, even as some of them made Christianity an integral part of their communities. As Kopelson shows, this transformation proceeded unevenly but inexorably during the long seventeenth century.

Jefferson S Body

by Maurizio Valsania, release date 2017-04-26, Jefferson S Body Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Jefferson S Body books, What did Thomas Jefferson look like? How did he carry himself? Such questions, reasonable to ask as we look back on a person who lived in an era before photography, are the starting point for this boldly original new work. Maurizio Valsania considers all aspects of Jefferson’s complex conception of "the body," from eighteenth-century clothing and fashion to manners, adornment, posture, gesture, and visual and material culture. Drawing also from the fields of medical science, psychology, and cultural anthropology, the author conjures a vivid and detailed re-creation of the third president as a living, breathing—and pondering—human being. Having situated Jefferson in his own body, Valsania looks at the embodied Jefferson in the world of his fellow humans. Any one of the other people in Jefferson’s society—whether that other person was male or female, free or enslaved, African American or Native American—was a critical counterexample for the eighteenth-century Virginian to define himself against, and Valsania’s explorations here lead to numerous insightful discoveries about race, gender, and structures of power. The first comprehensive exploration of Jefferson’s corporeal world, Jefferson’s Body brings the man vividly to life for the modern reader while deepening our understanding of what it meant to Jefferson to be alive.

The Predators Ball

by Connie Bruck, release date 2013-04-02, The Predators Ball Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Predators Ball books, An insightful portrait of junk-bond powerhouse Drexel Burnham Lambert and infamous financier Michael Milken, “one of the most brilliant minds ever to have been dedicated to Wall Street's money games.” (The New York Times). Milken is purported to have offered to pay award-winning journalist Connie Bruck to stop work on this book, the fascinating story of how a singularly brilliant and intensely private investment banker essentially masterminded the creation of the junk bond market, generating billions of dollars in profits for his clients and himself before ultimately being brought down by charges of insider trading, stock manipulation, and fraud under the RICO Act. Bruck’s in-depth narration of the phenomenal career of the man nicknamed “the Junk Bond King” spans Milken’s early dealings in high-yield bonds as well as numerous corporate raids and hostile takeovers guided by tactics that were undoubtedly revolutionary, if sometimes unethical—and occasionally outright illegal. Standing alongside other blockbuster tales of business malfeasance such as Liar’s Poker and Too Big to Fail, The Predators’ Ball is a shocking, bemusing, and enlightening portrait of an era when it seemed anything was possible on Wall Street—as long as Michael Milken was in your Rolodex.
