Foundations Of Language

by Ray Jackendoff, release date 2002-01-24, Foundations Of Language Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Foundations Of Language books, How does human language work? How do we put ideas into words that others can understand? Can linguistics shed light on the way the brain operates? Foundations of Language puts linguistics back at the centre of the search to understand human consciousness. Ray Jackendoff begins by surveying the developments in linguistics over the years since Noam Chomsky's Aspects of the Theory of Syntax. He goes on to propose a radical re-conception of how the brain processes language. This opens up vivid new perspectives on every major aspect of language and communication, including grammar, vocabulary, learning, the origins of human language, and how language relates to the real world. Foundations of Language makes important connections with other disciplines which have been isolated from linguistics for many years. It sets a new agenda for close cooperation between the study of language, mind, the brain, behaviour, and evolution.

Word And World

by Patricia Hanna, release date 2004, Word And World Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Word And World books, This important book proposes a new account of the nature of language, founded upon an original interpretation of Wittgenstein. The authors deny the existence of a direct referential relationship between words and things. Rather, the link between language and world is a two-stage one, in which meaning is used and in which a natural language should be understood as fundamentally a collection of socially devised and maintained practices. Arguing against the philosophical mainstream descending from Frege and Russell to Quine, Davidson, Dummett, McDowell, Evans, Putnam, Kripke and others, the authors demonstrate that discarding the notion of reference does not entail relativism or semantic nihilism. A provocative re-examination of the interrelations of language and social practice, this book will interest not only philosophers of language but also linguists, psycholinguists, students of communication and all those concerned with the nature and acquisition of human linguistic capacities.

Biological Foundations Of Language

by Eric H. Lenneberg, release date 1967-01-15, Biological Foundations Of Language Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Biological Foundations Of Language books, "The study of language is pertinent to many fields of inquiry. It is relevant to psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and medicine. It encroaches upon the humanities, as well as upon the social and natural sciences. We may pursue investigations that concentrate on what man has done with or to specific languages; or we may regard language as a natural phenomenon- an aspect of his biological nature, to be studied in the same manner as, for instance, his anatomy. Which of these approaches is to be chosen is entirely a matter of personal curiosity. This book is concerned with the biological aspects of language."--Preface.

Foundations Of Language Development

by Eric H. Lenneberg, release date 2014-05-12, Foundations Of Language Development Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Foundations Of Language Development books, Foundations of Language Development: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Volume 1 provides information pertinent to the important discoveries and issues in the area of language development. This book covers important topics, including language policy, language rehabilitation, and language in the classroom. Organized into three parts encompassing 19 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the relationship between animal communication and language proper. This text then examines the early metaphysical views as to the origin of speech and explores the probable nature of the language employed by early man. Other chapters consider the growing conception that language is essentially a localizable cerebral function. This book discusses as well the shortcomings of speech as a means of human communication. The final chapter deals with a comparison of child language with deteriorated language in senile dementia. This book is a valuable resource for linguists and readers who are faced with practical decisions concerning language.

Philosophical Foundations Of Language In The Law

by Andrei Marmor, release date 2013-01-31, Philosophical Foundations Of Language In The Law Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Philosophical Foundations Of Language In The Law books, This collection brings together the best contemporary philosophical work in the area of intersection between philosophy of language and the law. Some of the contributors are philosophers of language who are interested in applying advances in philosophy of language to legal issues, and some of the participants are philosophers of law who are interested in applying insights and theories from philosophy of language to their work on the nature of law and legal interpretation. By making this body of recent work available in a single volume, readers will gain both a general overview of the various interactions between language and law, and also detailed analyses of particular areas in which this interaction is manifest. The contributions to this volume are grouped under three main general areas: The first area concerns a critical assessment, in light of recent advances in philosophy of language, of the foundational role of language in understanding the nature of law itself. The second main area concerns a number of ways in which an understanding of language can resolve some of the issues prevalent in legal interpretation, such as the various ways in which semantic content can differ from law's assertive content; the contribution of presuppositions and pragmatic implicatures in understanding what the law conveys; the role of vagueness in legal language, for example. The third general topic concerns the role of language in the context of particular legal doctrines and legal solutions to practical problems, such as the legal definitions of inchoate crimes, the legal definition of torture, or the contractual doctrines concerning default rules. Together, these three key issues cover a wide range of philosophical interests in law that can be elucidated by a better understanding of language and linguistic communication.
