Health And Climate Change

by Pim Martens, release date 2014-04-08, Health And Climate Change Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Health And Climate Change books, 'Understanding how complex ecological and climatic change can influence human health is the new challenge before us. The book confronts these multidimensional risk assessments head-on and will catalyse the important interdisciplinary and integrated approach that is the new paradigm now required for environmental and public health research.' Dr JONATHAN PATZ Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health 'This book provides a sturdy foundation for thinking about how best to tackle a varied spectrum of population health hazards posed by different aspects and combinations of global change processes it alsogoes that extra mile by estimating the attributable population burdens of disease or mortality that are likely to result from these aspects of global change. It is heartening to see the results of this mathematical modeling being presented in policy-relevant terms.' From the Foreword by TONY McMICHAEL Health and Climate Change is the first major study of the potentially devastating health impacts of the global atmospheric changes which are under way. Using the best available data, the author presents models of the most plausible future courses of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and schistosomiasis; skin cancer caused by nozone depletion; and cardiovascular and respiratory disorders caused by higher temperatures. Current epidemiological research methods are not well adapted to analysing complex systems influenced by human intervention, or more simple processes calculated to take place within the distant future. Health and Climate Change proposes a new paradigm of integrated eco-epidemiological models for these areas of study. It will be essential reading for those concerned with public health and epidemiology, environmental studies, climate change and development studies. Originally published in 1998

Environmental Effects Of Ozone Depletion And Its Interactions With Climate Change

by United Nations Environment Programme, release date 2003, Environmental Effects Of Ozone Depletion And Its Interactions With Climate Change Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Environmental Effects Of Ozone Depletion And Its Interactions With Climate Change books, The 2002 report updates the assessment of the environmental effects of increased ultraviolet radiation and focuses on the interactions between ozone depletion and climate change. Findings include that atmospheric ozone levels remain depleted with an annual global average loss of about three per cent. Although the quality, quantity and availability of ground-based UV measurements continue to improve, a global-scale assessment is not yet available. Long-term effects on UV radiation from changes in cloud and snow cover have been observed, which indicates complex interactions between climate change and UV-B radiation. New studies continue to confirm the health problems caused by UV-B radiation, especially the formation of cataracts in the eyes, skin cancer and damage to the immune system. Interactions between UV radiation and other global climate change factors are also likely to affect many terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

by National Research Council, release date 2007-11-30, Review Of The U S Climate Change Science Program S Draft Synthesis And Assessment Product 2 4 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Review Of The U S Climate Change Science Program S Draft Synthesis And Assessment Product 2 4 books, The U.S. Climate Change Science Program is in the process of producing 21 draft assessments that investigate changes in the Earth's climate and related systems. These assessments are designed to inform decisionmakers about the scientific underpinnings of a range of environmental issues, such as stratospheric ozone. This National Research Council report reviews one of these assessments, Synthesis and Assessment Product (SAP) 2.4, Trends in Emissions of Ozone Depletion Substances, Ozone Layer Recovery, and Implications for Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure. This assessment is noted as being the first-ever attempt to look at the United States contribution to ozone-depleting substances and ozone recovery. This National Research Council book commends the assessment's authoring team for comprehensively covering the scientific basis of ozone and ozone-depleting substances, but recommends several ways that the assessment could be improved. Suggestions include clarifying the discussion on climate effects of ozone and revising the approach to estimating U.S. contributions to production, consumption, and emission of ozone-depleting substances. The assessment could also be improved by reorganizing and editing to accommodate intended audiences.
