Changing The Narrative

by Vivechkanand S. Chunoo, release date 2018-06-01, Changing The Narrative Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Changing The Narrative books, Social justice and leadership education are inextricably linked. In order to move social justice forward, we need to develop leaders with knowledge, skills, and values to engage effectively in the leadership process. We need socially just leaders now more than ever. At a time when our elected and appointed officials agree on very little, our communities are divided and distrustful of one another, and individual citizens struggle for fairness in the face of discrimination, society is at a crossroad. In one direction lies the reproduction of oppression and marginalization, continued distrust, and further fragmentation. In the other, a route toward healing, compassion, and fairness. How then do we prepare our leaders of tomorrow to walk the path of justice rather than take the road to ruin? Changing the dominant narratives in society involves preparing skilled social critics and knowledgeable advocates for positive and sustainable change through education. However, when leadership education fails to consider social justice issues, or when social justice education omits leadership learning, both fall short of their goals. This texts links issues of social justice, equity, and equality, to leadership knowledge, skills, and values, with the intent of offering theoretical, practical, and policy recommendations to improve the work of educators charged with preparing undergraduates for the complexities of leadership in all its forms. Collectively, the contributors inform much needed practices and pedagogies toward socially just leadership education. No single one of us can change the narrative alone, but together, we can amplify the voices of those leading toward justice. The perspectives offered here are but a sample of the work being done to make the future a brighter place for all. We invite you to be part of the conversation.

Learning To Serve

by Maureen E. Kenny, release date 2001-12-31, Learning To Serve Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Learning To Serve books, Service learning, as defined by the editors, is the generation of knowledge that is of benefit to the community as a whole. This seventh volume in the Outreach Scholarship book series contributes a unique discussion of how service learning functions as a critical cornerstone of outreach scholarship. The sections and chapters of this book marshal evidence in support of the idea that undergraduate service learning, infused throughout the curriculum and coupled with outreach scholarship, is an integral means through which higher education can engage people and institutions of the communities of this nation in a manner that perpetuate civil society. The editors, through this series of models of service learning, make a powerful argument for the necessity of "engaged institutions".

Leadership Development Through Campus Employment

by Adam Peck (Student affairs administrator), release date 2019, Leadership Development Through Campus Employment Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Leadership Development Through Campus Employment books, The goal of this issue is to bring new thinking and dialogue to leadership educators, student affairs professionals, or anyone working with undergraduate student employees, on how to redesign and rethink the student employment experience using concepts of team, developmental readiness, leadership competencies, developmental supervision, and intentionality to develop and enhance leader identity development and leadership capacity. This issue will also bridge the gap between the literature on student employment and leadership development, and what student affairs professionals and educators are actually doing in the field. The current literature highlights undergraduate experiences that students voluntarily involve themselves in such as internships, service learning, fraternity and sorority life, residence life, and student activities as key opportunities for leadership development and training. However, there is a proportion of the undergraduate student population that work on and off campus to help support themselves financially in college. Some of these students have access to leadership development due to their involvement on campus, while others may only have access to jobā€specific leadership training. The work environment presents an opportunity to assist in the development of leadership knowledge, skills, and competencies for all these students.
