Lizardi And The Birth Of The Novel In Spanish America

Download Lizardi And The Birth Of The Novel In Spanish America books, "Brilliant and succinct . . . the work is original, mature, interesting, and sure to be included in future research and teaching agendas." --Doris Sommer, Harvard University "The most thorough and insightful study of Fernández de Lizardi and his era to date." --Harold Dana Sims, professor emeritus of history, University of Pittsburgh Nancy Vogeley examines the emergence of the novel in Mexico at the conclusion of Spain's 300 years of colonial rule. Acknowledged as Spanish America's first novelist, José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi introduced the genre into Mexico during its war of independence. His novel El Periquillo Sarniento, published in 1816, became the symbol of new nationhood, and his commentary on social issues contributed to the revolutionary dialogue. Focusing on the Periquillo and three other novels by Lizardi, Vogeley analyzes these stories for their decolonizing thinking--as an innovative linguistic discourse in a setting where the Inquisition and colonial tradition controlled production. She argues that Lizardi's satiric portrayal of ugly contemporary realities forced readers away from the text, and thus away from blind acceptance of authority and the mechanical repetition of words. She concludes that the birth of the novel came with the death of the catechism. This first book-length treatment of Lizardi will be of interest to Latin Americanists, literary historians, and those concerned with imperial histories and the topic of decolonization. Nancy Vogeley is professor emerita of Spanish at the University of San Francisco. Among her studies of early 19th-century Mexico is La literature manuscrita: Un manuscrito inédito de poesías de José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, an unknown poetry manuscript by Lizardi which she has edited.

The Mangy Parrot

by José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi, release date 2004, The Mangy Parrot Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Mangy Parrot books, Repeatedly imprisoned for his printed attacks on the Spanish administration, Mexican journalist and publisher José Joaquin Fernández de Lizardi attempted, in 1816, to make an end-run around government censors by disguising his invective as serial fiction. Lizardi's experiment in subterfuge quickly failed: Spanish officials shut down publication of the novel -- the first to be published in Latin America -- after the third installment, and within four years Lizardi was back in jail. The whole of The Mangy Parrot (El Periquillo Sarniento) went unpublished until after Lizardi's death -- and a decade after Mexico had won its independence from Spain. Though never before published in its entirety in English, The Mangy Parrot has become a Mexican classic beloved by generations of Latin American readers. Now, in vibrant American idiom, translator David Frye captures the exuberance of Lizardi's tale-telling as the author follows his narrator and alter ego, Periquillo Sarniento, through a series of misadventures that exposes the ignorance and corruption plaguing Mexican society on the eve of the wars for independence. Raw descriptions of colonial street life, candid portraits of race and ethnicity, and barely camouflaged attacks on colonial authority fill this comic masterpiece of world literature -- the Don Quixote of Latin America.

Early Spanish American Narrative

by Naomi Lindstrom, release date 2009-09-15, Early Spanish American Narrative Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Early Spanish American Narrative books, The world discovered Latin American literature in the twentieth century, but the roots of this rich literary tradition reach back beyond Columbus's discovery of the New World. The great pre-Hispanic civilizations composed narrative accounts of the acts of gods and kings. Conquistadors and friars, as well as their Amerindian subjects, recorded the clash of cultures that followed the Spanish conquest. Three hundred years of colonization and the struggle for independence gave rise to a diverse body of literature—including the novel, which flourished in the second half of the nineteenth century. To give everyone interested in contemporary Spanish American fiction a broad understanding of its literary antecedents, this book offers an authoritative survey of four centuries of Spanish American narrative. Naomi Lindstrom begins with Amerindian narratives and moves forward chronologically through the conquest and colonial eras, the wars for independence, and the nineteenth century. She focuses on the trends and movements that characterized the development of prose narrative in Spanish America, with incisive discussions of representative works from each era. Her inclusion of women and Amerindian authors who have been downplayed in other survey works, as well as her overview of recent critical assessments of early Spanish American narratives, makes this book especially useful for college students and professors.
