Contemporary Masculinities In Fiction Film And Television

by Brian Baker, release date 2015-01-29, Contemporary Masculinities In Fiction Film And Television Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Contemporary Masculinities In Fiction Film And Television books, While masculinity has been an increasingly visible field of study within several disciplines (sociology, literary studies, cultural studies, film and tv) over the last two decades, it is surprising that analysis of contemporary representations of the first part of the century has yet to emerge. Professor Brian Baker, evolving from his previous work Masculinities in Fiction and Film: Representing Men in Popular Genres 1945-2000, intervenes to rectify the scholarship in the field to produce a wide-ranging, readable text that deals with films and other texts produced since the year 2000. Focusing on representations of masculinity in cinema, popular fiction and television from the period 2000-2010, he argues that dominant forms of masculinity in Britain and the United States have become increasingly informed by anxiety, trauma and loss, and this has resulted in both narratives that reflect that trauma and others which attempt to return to a more complete and heroic form of masculinity. While focusing on a range of popular genres, such as Bond films, war movies, science fiction and the Gothic, the work places close analyses of individual films and texts in their cultural and historical contexts, arguing for the importance of these popular fictions in diagnosing how contemporary Britain and the United States understand themselves and their changing role in the world through the representation of men, fully recognising the issues of race/ethnicity, class, sexuality, and age. Baker draws upon current work in mobility studies and in the study of masculinities to produce the first book-length comparative study of masculinity in popular culture of the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Masculinity In The Golden Age Of Swedish Cinema

by Tommy Gustafsson, release date 2014-10-21, Masculinity In The Golden Age Of Swedish Cinema Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Masculinity In The Golden Age Of Swedish Cinema books, Swedish society underwent great changes during the first decades of the 1900s and the new consumption and entertainment culture came under fire. Children and youth--but also women and the working classes--become symbols of the forces breaking down traditional structures and values. These groups were also identified as the principal audience for the new film medium. Hence, during the silent era, film culture interacted with society at large, filling the screen with contradictory images of diverging masculinities and gender/ethnic relations. In fact, film culture became one of the most important arenas where new gender relations could be articulated. This book covers Swedish film culture throughout the 1920s. It is the first in-depth exploration of Swedish silent film culture that goes beyond the small number of canonized films of the "Swedish Golden Age" that have been discussed as "art" for nearly 100 years. The study is based on extensive research and takes all Swedish feature films produced in the 1920s into consideration, together with a large number of source materials that include fan and trade magazines, manuscripts, censorship records, government reports and some 900 film reviews.

Space And Place In The Hunger Games

by Deidre Anne Evans Garriott,, release date 2014-03-28, Space And Place In The Hunger Games Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Space And Place In The Hunger Games books, An international bestseller and the inspiration for a blockbuster film series, Suzanne Collins’s dystopian, young adult trilogy The Hunger Games has also attracted attention from literary scholars. While much of the criticism has focused on traditional literary readings, this innovative collection explores the phenomena of place and space in the novels—how places define people, how they wield power to create social hierarchies, and how they can be conceptualized, carved out, imagined and used. The essays consider wide-ranging topics: the problem of the trilogy’s Epilogue; the purpose of the love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta; Katniss’s role as “mother”; and the trilogy as a textual “safe space” to explore dangerous topics. Presenting the trilogy as a place and space for multiple discourses—political, social and literary—this work assertively places The Hunger Games in conversation with the world in which it was written, read, and adapted.

by Helena Wahlström, release date 2010-10-12, New Fathers Contemporary American Stories Of Masculinity Domesticity And Kinship Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download New Fathers Contemporary American Stories Of Masculinity Domesticity And Kinship books, What do novels such as Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News, Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World, and Jayne Anne Phillips’ MotherKind have in common with films such as Smoke and Mrs Doubtfire? This study explores the intersection of masculinity and domesticity in contemporary film and literature. It argues that these texts, produced since the 1990s, address with some urgency the notion of “new fatherhood” in the United States. They offer explorations of the idea that American fatherhood around the turn of the twenty-first century is changing, and they problematize the legitimacy of “new fathers” and “alternative families” in a national culture where the “old” patriarch and the nuclear family still often loom large in the imagination of many Americans.

The narrative analysis in the book as well involves an observation of the narrator’s point-of-view and its reliability. The contents of the book may serve as a valuable source for aspiring students and researchers in the area of literary and film studies.
