The Practical Pain Management Handbook

by Dr Keren Fisher, release date 2018-12-20, The Practical Pain Management Handbook Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Practical Pain Management Handbook books, The successful management of chronic pain remains an elusive goal. As more complex diagnostic and intervention procedures become available, patients and clinicians alike have ever-greater expectations of banishing the problem of pain altogether. Unfortunately this hope is rarely fulfilled and the frustration experienced by everyone affected by chronic pain has remained more or less the same over the last two or three decades. Based on over 40 years' of experience and research The Practical Pain Management Handbook is a unique resource specifically designed for therapists involved in running Pain Management Programmes (PMPs). This engaging and effective handbook includes: intensive inpatient and extended outpatient programmes all of which are at least 25 hours in length; interactive materials designed to be used to form the basis of group discussion. Where there is a question in the text the suggested answer material is provided; assignments and tasks that can be used as homework or group session exercises; both standard Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) technologies as both have been found to be valuable in PMPs. The handbook is organised into sections to fit a useful logical sequence but can be adapted to suit your preference.

Practical Pain Management Options For Piglet Castration

by Mary Catherine Burkemper, release date 2019, Practical Pain Management Options For Piglet Castration Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Practical Pain Management Options For Piglet Castration books, Surgical castration is a routine procedure conducted on nearly all male piglets in the U.S. swine industry. Castration is a painful procedure as indicated by behavioral and physiological deviations demonstrated by piglets post-procedure. Due to this welfare issue, investigating and implementing practical means for mitigating castration pain is critical. The objective of the first study was to evaluate the effects of oral meloxicam and topical lidocaine, separately and in combination, on pain-associated behaviors in piglets undergoing castration. Two hundred thirty-five piglets were surgically castrated between three and seven days of age. Immediately following castration, piglets received one of four treatments 1) No pain mitigation (C; control; n = 58), 2) NSAID only (M; meloxicam; n = 59), 3) Topical anesthetic (L; lidocaine spray; n = 60) or 4) NSAID and topical anesthetic (X; meloxicam and lidocaine spray; n = 59). Behaviors were recorded by direct observation of individual piglets using five-minute scan samples for a five-hour period, for the three days post-castration. Oral meloxicam and topical lidocaine spray administration at the time of castration did not mitigate pain-associated with castration (P = 0.09; C: 2.1 ± 0.1, L: 2.4 ± 0.1, M: 2.1 ± 0.1 and X: 2.1 ± 0.1). The objective of the second study was to evaluate the effects of oral meloxicam administered post-castration on piglet performance pre-weaning. A total of 5045 piglets on one sow farm in the U.S. were castrated between three to five days of age. Piglets within a litter were weighed the day prior to castration, blocked by body weight and assigned to one of two treatments: Control (C; surgically castrated); or Meloxicam (M; surgically castrated and administered 1.0 mL oral meloxicam). Cross fostering status, mortality, and weight measurements were collected at the end of the pre-weaning period. Administration of meloxicam at castration required five additional seconds per pig and had no effect on average daily gain, mortality, or survivability in piglets during the pre-weaning period. Results of the present study indicate oral meloxicam administration can be implemented on commercial farms without hindering piglet performance and requiring minimal additional time to administer. These studies demonstrate that topical lidocaine and oral meloxicam can be successfully implemented into commercial swine castration protocols without negatively affecting piglet performance or requiring substantial additional time. This is important as U.S. consumers demand producers implement pain management strategies on farm. However, the first study failed to demonstrate a reduction in pain-associated behaviors when administering topical lidocaine and oral meloxicam at the time of castration, thus emphasizing further pain mitigation research must take into consideration drug type, administration route, frequency and dosage. Alternatively, future work identifying effective means to eliminate the surgical castration procedure altogether are also warranted.

Hypnosis For Chronic Pain Management

by Mark P. Jensen, release date 2011-04-05, Hypnosis For Chronic Pain Management Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hypnosis For Chronic Pain Management books, Winner of the 2011 Arthur Shapiro Award for Best Book on Hypnosis, from the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis An explosion of interest in the applications of hypnosis for clinical problems, especially pain, has led to a wide accumulation of research on hypnosis as a viable, beneficial supplement to treatment protocols. Over the past two decades, published controlled trials have confirmed that hypnosis treatments are effective for reducing daily pain intensity, increasing activity level, and improving mood and sleep quality in individuals with chronic pain. Moreover, evidence also suggests that hypnotic procedures can increase the beneficial effects of other treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Based on these findings, there is a lack of practical resources in the field that offer recommendations for incorporating hypnosis and hypnotic protocols into treatment for pain management. This therapist guide fills this gap by distilling the techniques empirically validated by these clinical trials into one comprehensive, user-friendly volume. Organized into three parts, Hypnosis for Chronic Pain Management summarizes the findings from research, examines the effects of hypnosis on pain, and provides step-by-step instructions for performing hypnotic inductions and making hypnotic suggestions. Designed to be used in conjunction with the corresponding patient workbook, this unique therapist guide is written for clinicians who treat patients with chronic pain and who wish to incorporate hypnosis and hypnotic procedures into their treatment protocols, or those clinicians who already have training in clinical hypnosis and hope to acquire the skills needed to apply it to pain management. "An excellent blueprint to understanding pain and the fundamentals of how hypnosis combined with CBT can offer pain amelioration. Perfect, even for uninitiated practitioners who wish to use empirically based scripts."--Jeffrey Zeig, Ph.D., The Milton Erickson Foundation "Pain can too easily enslave people, holding them captive in many different ways. It is a liberating theme of empowerment that echoes throughout Dr. Jensen's work: he empowers clinicians to work more knowledgeably and skillfully with people who suffer painful conditions using his therapist guide, and he encourages the suffering individual to break free from pain's grip with the practical pain management skills taught in his workbook. Dr. Jensen's vision for the many ways hypnosis can help reduce the debilitating effects of painful conditions is fresh, inspiring and should be regularly integrated into every pain management program."--Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and author of Trancework: An Introduction to the Practice of Clinical Hypnosis (Third Edition) and Treating Depression with Hypnosis

Integrative Pain Management

by Robert Alan Bonakdar, release date 2016-02-25, Integrative Pain Management Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Integrative Pain Management books, Integrative Pain Management provides an overview of pain physiology, current conventional care options, an understanding of integrative medicine as it applies to pain management, the role of pain practitioners when working collaboratively, and the utilization of an expansive and patient-centered treatment model. This comprehensive guide written by experts in the field provides case examples of pain conditions, reviews common integrative treatments including physical therapy, behavioral strategies, and advanced procedures to maximize function and reduce pain, and extensive further reading resources. Part of the Weil Integrative Medicine Library, this volume offers clinicians treating pain innovative and patient-centered tools for approaching their most difficult cases to improve their approach and outcomes. The book provides access to additional online content that supplements some of the integrative interventions discussed including videos of tai chi in pain management, a demonstration of motivational interviewing as practitioner empowerment, and figures including the STarT Back Screening Tool (SBST) for spine care. Integrative medicine is defined as healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle; it emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD, is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the U.S., and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."
