Routledge Revivals English Literature 1962

by B. Ifor Evans, release date 2017-11-22, Routledge Revivals English Literature 1962 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Routledge Revivals English Literature 1962 books, First published in 1962, this book is a reflection on Sir Ifor Evans’s well-known A Short History of English Literature. In this reflective study, Evans wonders if it is possible to trace permanent elements in such a huge and varied mass of writings? As he moves from the Anglo-Saxon Caedmon to T.S Eliot, or from Milton to James Joyce, he finds out how, in unexpected ways, the English spirit of compromise extends into its literature, along with its love of nature and interest in the individual. In poetic imagery above all the British genius seems, typically, to have found a way of making ‘empiricism transcendental’. This book, which had its origin during the war under the aegis of the British Council, provides the reader with a stimulating passport to a very rich kingdom.

by Herbert Butterfield, release date 2017-11-22, Routledge Revivals The Universities And Education Today 1962 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Routledge Revivals The Universities And Education Today 1962 books, First published in 1962, this book comprises lectures given in November 1961 to what was then the University College of North Staffordshire. It deals with the aims, rather than the administrative problems of the Universities, to put at the forefront of the reader’s mind the fundamentals of University organisation, structure, and development. Butterfield has in mind the needs of undergraduates, and tries to concentrate attention on that electric contact between teacher and student for the sake of which all our elaborate educational machinery exists. He examines the position of the teacher, the status and function of an academic profession, and the relations between teaching and research.

Routledge Revivals English Poetry In The Later Nineteenth Century 1933

by B. Ifor Evans, release date 2017-11-30, Routledge Revivals English Poetry In The Later Nineteenth Century 1933 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Routledge Revivals English Poetry In The Later Nineteenth Century 1933 books, First published in 1933, this study, which underwent revision in the 1960s, is a comprehensive survey of the verse of English nineteenth-century poets whose work appeared after 1860. A special feature is the full and critical treatment of minor writers. In no other book is their work so carefully evaluated. There is a full account of the minor Pre-Raphaelites, of James Thomson, the poet of The City of Dreadful Night, of Henley, Stevenson and George MacDonald. John Davidson is the subject of a long and revealing study. Evans suggests that poetry from the late nineteenth century is neglected in scholarly study, and that Victorian Romanticism deserves more attention than it has recently received.

Realist Fiction And The Strolling Spectator Routledge Revivals

by John Rignall, release date 2016-01-29, Realist Fiction And The Strolling Spectator Routledge Revivals Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Realist Fiction And The Strolling Spectator Routledge Revivals books, The classic realist text has long been derided by post-structuralist critics as an unsophisticated and reactionary form. In this study, first published in 1992, John Rignall makes a powerful case for the rehabilitation of realism as a self-aware and reflexive genre. Using the novels of Scott, Balzac, Dickens, George Eliot, Flaubert, James, Ford and Conrad, Rignall argues for an understanding of realism through the recurrent figure of the flâneur. The flâneur is the strolling spectator whose problematic vision both of and in the novel makes him the representative figure of the realist text. A significant contribution to the field, this title will be of particular view to students of realism, literary theory, and comparative literature.

The Third City Routledge Revivals

by Borna Bebek, release date 2014-02-04, The Third City Routledge Revivals Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Third City Routledge Revivals books, The Third City, first published in 1982, offers an innovative response to the troubled relationship between Western philosophy, as it has been conducted since the Renaissance, and the everyday lives of the communities in which we live. Bebek contends that the model of philosophical reflection is to be found in Plato’s dialogues, which, rather than simply describing utopia through a series of abstract ‘concepts’, were instead designed to impel the learner towards a recognition of the true nature of reality – as much a ‘self-recognition’ as an understanding of the world ‘out there’. Thus, in order to revive the spirit of true philosophy, it is necessary to avoid both the false extremes of idealism and materialism, and to allow ethics once more to merge with epistemology. This title presents an exposition of this ethically based philosophy, allowing the very human insights of Plato to illumine the diverse problems of today.

Elizabethan Grotesque Routledge Revivals

by Neil Rhodes, release date 2014-08-01, Elizabethan Grotesque Routledge Revivals Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Elizabethan Grotesque Routledge Revivals books, The comic grotesque is a powerful element in a great deal of Elizabethan literature, but one which has attracted scant critical attention. In this study, first published in 1980, Neil Rhodes examines the nature of the grotesque in late sixteenth-century culture, and shows the part it played in the development of new styles of comic prose and drama in Elizabethan England. In defining ‘grotesque’, the author considers the stylistic techniques of Rabelais and Aretino, as well as the graphic arts. He discusses the use of the grotesque in Elizabethan pamphlet literature and the early satirical journalists such as Nashe, and argues that their work in turn stimulated the growth of satirical drama at the end of the century. The second part of the book explains the importance of Nashe’s achievement for Shakespeare and Jonson, concluding that the linguistic resources of English Renaissance comedy are peculiarly – and perhaps uniquely – physical.
