Reconcilable Differences

by Lynn S. Chancer, release date 1998-05-15, Reconcilable Differences Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Reconcilable Differences books, This volume examines controversial faultlines in contemporary feminism—pornography, the beauty myth, sadomasochism, prostitution, and the issue of rape—from an original and provocative perspective. Lynn Chancer focuses on how, among many feminists, the concepts of sex and sexism became fragmented and mutually exclusive. Exploring the dichotomy between sex and sexism as it has developed through five current feminist debates, Chancer seeks to forge positions that bridge oppositions between unnecessary (and sometimes unwitting) "either/or" binaries. Chancer's book attempts to incorporate both the need for sexual freedom and the depth of sexist subordination into feminist thought and politics.

Still Lifting Still Climbing

by Kimberly Springer, release date 1999-08-01, Still Lifting Still Climbing Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Still Lifting Still Climbing books, Still Lifting, Still Climbing is the first volume of its kind to document African American women's activism in the wake of the civil rights movement. Covering grassroots and national movements alike, contributors explore black women's mobilization around such areas as the black nationalist movements, the Million Man March, black feminism, anti-rape movements, mass incarceration, the U.S. Congress, welfare rights, health care, and labor organizing. Detailing the impact of post-1960s African American women's activism, they provide a much-needed update to the historical narrative. Ideal for course use, the volume includes original essays as well as primary source documents such as first-hand accounts of activism and statements of purpose. Each contributor carefully situates their topic within its historical framework, providing an accessible context for those unfamiliar with black women's history, and demonstrating that African American women's political agency does not emerge from a vacuum, but is part of a complex system of institutions, economics, and personal beliefs. This ambitious volume will be an invaluable resource on the state of contemporary African American women's activism.

The study of gender, race and class as a combined topic has evolved over the years, and this concise, accessible volume shows why the subject continues to resonate both in and outside the academy. Examines recent scholarship to how one’s gender, with the added dimension of race and class, can impact one’s experiences in society. Probes deeper under the surface of different biases to see whether common elements of discrimination may also be at work. Includes a conceptual “vocabulary” that describes how gender, race and class interrelate.

Eros In A Narcissistic Culture

by R.D. Ellis, release date 2012-12-06, Eros In A Narcissistic Culture Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Eros In A Narcissistic Culture books, The Urgency of Changing Our Thinking about Eros In Atlanta recently, a man broke into the apartment of his former girlfriend and brutally murdered both her and her new lover with an axe. When asked later whether he had considered the consequences of being apprehended and prosecuted, he responded that without his relationship to this particular woman his life had no meaning, and for this reason it made no difference what happened to him. All-too-facile explanations of such events can be devised in terms of neurological imbalances or improper child-rearing practices. But why are suicide, the murder of spouses and lovers, and other crimes of passion so much more prevalent in advanced, urban-industrial cultures, and especially in those where people's value is assessed in terms of socio-economic success and failure? And why do the associated psychic disturbances express themselves so prominently in terms of disruption of attitudes toward love relationships? It cannot be a mere coincidence that the most heinous crimes are crimes of love. I shall suggest here that the most direct way to understand the most prevalent dysfunctions of the modern psyche is to understand the dysfunctions of eros. The reason for this is twofold. First, eros is central tQl the project of defining meaning for conscious beings - for reasons more fundamentally philosophical than anything envisioned by Freud or other drive-reduction theorists.

Power And Inequality In Interpersonal Relations

by Vladimir Shlapentokh, release date 2015-02-28, Power And Inequality In Interpersonal Relations Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Power And Inequality In Interpersonal Relations books, This book explores interpersonal situations in which weak or vulnerable people find themselves and the ways in which others help create, sustain, and eradicate such social dynamics. Vladimir Shlapentokh and Eric Beasley demonstrate that people can gain power over each other and then abuse this power because of unequal resource conditions. The authors define resources as the means necessary for satisfaction or achievement of needs or goals, such as wealth, physical strength, intellectual capacity and information, sexual attractiveness, and status. This volume is different from existing social science books on inequality and vulnerability, which address relations between people of different social positions, races, genders, ages, and places of residence confronting each other in political, economic, and cultural battles. This book focuses on people who become the victims of those whom they know personally—relatives, colleagues, neighbors. The authors argue that unequal resource distribution among members of social units is the main cause of conflict and ultimately creates situations where members of a social unit can abuse other members of the same unit.
