by Maya Cantu, release date 2015-10-14, American Cinderellas On The Broadway Musical Stage Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download American Cinderellas On The Broadway Musical Stage books, Drawing upon Broadway musicals ranging from Irene (1919) to Gypsy (1959), American Cinderellas on the Broadway Musical Stage considers how Broadway musicals from the 1920s through the 1950s adapted and transformed Perrault's fairy tale icon in order to address changing social and professional roles for American women. Drawing heavily upon historical research in American culture and gender studies, Cantu analyzes female lyricists and librettists who were significant in translating Perrault's heroine to the contexts and concerns of the American "working girl." In exploring how these and other writers (of both sexes) adapted the Cinderella myth to a twentieth-century urban landscape, this book challenges traditional assumptions about the American musical's relationship to both feminism and modernism - placing the Cinderella story into the Broadway musical canon.

Little What S His Name Le Petit Chose French Classics

by Alphonse Daudet, release date 2015-01-06, Little What S His Name Le Petit Chose French Classics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Little What S His Name Le Petit Chose French Classics books, Little What's-His-Name (Le Petit Chose) - Alphonse Daudet's (1840-1897) first published, though not his first written, novel - appeared in 1868. The first part was composed in that Southern France it describes so charmingly; its first chapters form one of the most touching of autobiographies. In the second part Daudet has to tell of the struggles of an idealistic young poet in the selfish, devouring whirlpool of Paris. The whole book seems to bear the impress of the circumstances under which it was written. It is full of the milk of human kindness. --- When Daudet wrote Le Petit Chose in his early manhood, he succeeded in producing one of the most delightfully idyllic of his works, one that will probably continue to be read as long as any of the more powerful novels of his prime. It is one of the most perfect representations in literature of childhood's hopes and fears and of youth's aspirations and defeats. It is perfect because it is real. --- Enjoy to the full one of the purest and most exquisite stories of youthful experience to be found in French or in any other literature. (W. P. Trent)

Download The Ghost Of The Cuban Queen Bordello books, "The account begins as a true ghost story based on actual events. After an unsettling, modern day, ghostly encounter at a crumbling 1920's bordello in Jerome, Arizona, the author sets out on a quest and uncovers some deplorable secrets regarding the attractive, but devious Madam that once resided there. This curvaceous Madam began her career in the early 1900's in the red light district of Storyville in New Orleans. It was there where she met and eventually married the famous Jelly Roll Morton. She frequently changed her name and even her race in order to accommodate g=her ever-changing circumstances. She bleached her skin and straighten her hair as if to deny her African heritage ... or was it just a trick of her trade? Constantly on the move, she operated the Arcade Saloon in the pioneer town of Las Vegas, Nevada, and then a jazz club in San Francisco. Moving on to the rich mining town of Jerome, Arizona, she ran a "house of pleasure" called the Cuban Queen Bordello. Much went on behind her closed doors, where gambling, prostitution, and bootlegged whiskey were always on the menu. Late one night in 1927, one of her working girls was murdered in her own bed. This cunning madam, along with her handsome accomplice, kidnapped the dead girl's baby boy and slipped out of town never to be heard from again.... until now."--Back cover.

The Passions Of Rhetoric Lessing S Theory Of Argument And The German Enlightenment

by E.K. Moore, release date 2012-12-06, The Passions Of Rhetoric Lessing S Theory Of Argument And The German Enlightenment Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Passions Of Rhetoric Lessing S Theory Of Argument And The German Enlightenment books, The goal of this book is to ascertain Lessing's views on argumentation and rhetoric. I intend to establish that these views constitute a systematic and coherent theory and to argue that for Lessing rhetoric in argument can yield philosophical truth. Analysis of Lessing's views also sheds light on the general significance of rhetoric in the 18th century. The denial that rhetoric has claims to truth is a long-standing prejudice of Western thought. This position is evident in Kant's rejection of rhetoric in philosophical discourse. But in my view, the situation in the 18th century in Germany was somewhat more complex. Rhetoric did not die a quiet death but was very much alive in polemical tracts, and Lessing was a pivotal figure in a culture dominated by argument and disputation. I asked myself why and how this polemical age came to an end and how does the rejection of polemics by the 19th century affect our understanding of the 18th century? In the Introduction, I address some of these questions and establish a historical framework for the development of polemics in the 18th century. Another reason this polemical age has traditionally been seen as problematic for the scholars of the period is because argument, disputation and debate cannot be submitted to the same easy analysis as the systematic treatises produced at the end of the century.
