Treading On Hallowed Ground

by C. Christine Fair, release date 2008-09-29, Treading On Hallowed Ground Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Treading On Hallowed Ground books, After America's Iraq adventure devolved into a debacle, a chorus of commentators and analysts noted that the U.S. military had no plan to fight a counterinsurgency campaign. Given the failure of conventional tactics, America in the last two years has redoubled its efforts to develop a new strategy to fight the Iraqi insurgency, and has gone so far to place our leading counterinsurgency expert, General David Petraeus, in charge of the Iraq theater. In sum, there seems to be a growing consensus that for better or worse, counterinsurgency will be a core tactic in future American military campaigns. Iraq, of course, presents special problems to the U.S. because of the intensity of religious belief and sectarianism. How do we fight against an insurgency that so often strategically positions itself on 'hallowed ground'--mosques and shrines? Yet Iraq is not unique. As the contributors to Treading on Hallowed Ground show, counterinsurgency efforts on religiously contentious terrain is a widespread phenomenon in recent times, ranging from North Africa to Central and Southeast Asia. Here, C. Christine Fair and Sumit Ganguly have assembled an impressive group of experts to explore the most important counterinsurgency efforts in sacred spaces in our era: churches in Israel, mosques and shrines in Iraq, the Sikh Golden Temple in India, mosques and temples in Kashmir, the Krue Se Mosque in Thailand, and the Grand Mosque in Saudi Arabia. Taken together, the essays comprise the first comprehensive account of this increasingly pivotal component of contemporary war.

War On Sacred Grounds

by Ron E. Hassner, release date 2010-12-15, War On Sacred Grounds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download War On Sacred Grounds books, Sacred sites offer believers the possibility of communing with the divine and achieving deeper insight into their faith. Yet their spiritual and cultural importance can lead to competition as religious groups seek to exclude rivals from practicing potentially sacrilegious rituals in the hallowed space and wish to assert their own claims. Holy places thus create the potential for military, theological, or political clashes, not only between competing religious groups but also between religious groups and secular actors. In War on Sacred Grounds, Ron E. Hassner investigates the causes and properties of conflicts over sites that are both venerated and contested; he also proposes potential means for managing these disputes. Hassner illustrates a complex and poorly understood political dilemma with accounts of the failures to reach settlement at Temple Mount/Haram el-Sharif, leading to the clashes of 2000, and the competing claims of Hindus and Muslims at Ayodhya, which resulted in the destruction of the mosque there in 1992. He also addresses more successful compromises in Jerusalem in 1967 and Mecca in 1979. Sacred sites, he contends, are particularly prone to conflict because they provide valuable resources for both religious and political actors yet cannot be divided. The management of conflicts over sacred sites requires cooperation, Hassner suggests, between political leaders interested in promoting conflict resolution and religious leaders who can shape the meaning and value that sacred places hold for believers. Because a reconfiguration of sacred space requires a confluence of political will, religious authority, and a window of opportunity, it is relatively rare. Drawing on the study of religion and the study of politics in equal measure, Hassner's account offers insight into the often-violent dynamics that come into play at the places where religion and politics collide.

Pakistan S War On Terrorism

by Samir Puri, release date 2012-02-20, Pakistan S War On Terrorism Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Pakistan S War On Terrorism books, This book examines Pakistan's strategies in the war against Islamist armed groups that began late 2001, following the 9/11 attacks. The significance of the war inside Pakistan can hardly be understated. Starting in the tribal territories adjacent to Afghanistan, Pakistan’s war has come to engulf the majority of the country through a brutal campaign of suicide bombings. Thousands of Pakistani lives have been lost and the geostrategic balance of the region has been thrown into deep uncertainty. Pakistan's War on Terrorism is an account of a decade-long war following the 9/11 attacks, that is yet to be chronicled in systematic fashion as a campaign of military manoeuvre and terrorist reprisal. It is also an analytic account of Pakistan’s strategic calculus during this time, both in military and political terms, and how these factors have been filtered by Pakistan’s unique strategic culture. This text will be of great interest to students of Asian Politics, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Security Studies in general.

The Trident Deception

by Rick Campbell, release date 2014-03-11, The Trident Deception Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Trident Deception books, "The best submarine novel since Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October." —Booklist (starred review) The USS Kentucky—a Trident ballistic missile submarine carrying a full complement of 192 nuclear warheads—is about to go on a routine patrol. Not long after it reaches the open sea, however, the Kentucky receives a launch order. After receiving that launch order, it is cut off from all counter-orders and disappears into the Pacific while it makes the eight-day transit to the launch site. What the Kentucky's crew doesn't know is that those launch orders haven't actually come from the U.S. government. Rogue elements within the Mossad have learned that Iran has developed its first nuclear weapon and, in ten days, will detonate it—and the target is Israel. The suspected weapon complex is too far underground for conventional weapons to harm it, and the only choice is a pre-emptive nuclear strike. With limited time, this rogue group initiates a long-planned operation called the Trident Deception. They'll transmit false orders and use a U.S. nuclear submarine to launch the attack. In this thriller from Rick Campbell, with only 8 days before the Kentucky is in launch range and with the submarine cut off from any outside communication, one senior officer, the father of one of the officers aboard the submarine, must assemble and lead a team of attack submarines to find, intercept and neutralize the Kentucky before it can unknowingly unleash a devastating nuclear attack.

Montana Summer

by Tom Yankus, release date 2000-03-01, Montana Summer Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Montana Summer books, In this autobiographical sweep through the mists of baseball's past, the author recounts his summer of professional baseball as a pitcher/bus driver for a Class C team in Missoula, Montana in 1956. Long road trips through the Rockies gave him time to reflect on his place in the infrastructure of the game of baseball as well as to search for sexual fulfillment somewhere in the far reaches of the minor league system. The dirt and the grime of bush league baseball did nothing either to dim the author's hopes that he would succeed as a pitcher or to discourage him from seeking a woman whose sexual frustrations matched his. Interwoven among the descriptions of games won and lost is a panoply of life off the field in a small town for whose citizens the Missoula Timberjacks were the only diversion. A visit from resident hookers, a near-disaster on a bus run, skinny-dipping in an icy river, racing another team's bus through noon traffic - all color the perceptions of a young man who brought a keen sensitivity to his summer of new experiences. Always aware that at any moment he could be released by the team and conscious of a yearning for some semblance of sexual gratification, the author battled his way through a summer that exposed his average gifts as an athlete and as a lothario. There follow a handful of personal essays and reflective notes on all manner of things, from the author's adventures with earthquakes and floods during his sabbatical in the South Pacific to his attempt to separate fact from fiction when dealing with hero worship in a high school setting. An overlay of dry humor imbues this collection with enough irony to disguise the lack of substance. Fortunately, the price is right.
