Cursed Britain

by Thomas Waters, release date 2019-01-01, Cursed Britain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Cursed Britain books, The definitive history of how witchcraft and black magic have survived, through the modern era and into the present day Cursed Britain unveils the enduring power of witchcraft, curses and black magic in modern times. Few topics are so secretive or controversial. Yet, whether in the 1800s or the early 2000s, when disasters struck or personal misfortunes mounted, many Britons found themselves believing in things they had previously dismissed - dark supernatural forces. Historian Thomas Waters here explores the lives of cursed or bewitched people, along with the witches and witch-busters who helped and harmed them. Waters takes us on a fascinating journey from Scottish islands to the folklore-rich West Country, from the immense territories of the British Empire to metropolitan London. We learn why magic caters to deep-seated human needs but see how it can also be abused, and discover how witchcraft survives by evolving and changing. Along the way, we examine an array of remarkable beliefs and rituals, from traditional folk magic to diverse spiritualities originating in Africa and Asia. This is a tale of cynical quacks and sincere magical healers, depressed people and furious vigilantes, innocent victims and rogues who claimed to possess evil abilities. Their spellbinding stories raise important questions about the state's role in regulating radical spiritualities, the fragility of secularism and the true nature of magic.

The Mummy S Curse

by Roger Luckhurst, release date 2012-10-25, The Mummy S Curse Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Mummy S Curse books, In the winter of 1922-23 archaeologist Howard Carter and his wealthy patron George Herbert, the Fifth Earl of Carnarvon, sensationally opened the tomb of Tutenkhamen. Six weeks later Herbert, the sponsor of the expedition, died in Egypt. The popular press went wild with rumours of a curse on those who disturbed the Pharaoh's rest and for years followed every twist and turn of the fate of the men who had been involved in the historic discovery. Long dismissed by Egyptologists, the mummy's curse remains a part of popular supernatural belief. Roger Luckhurst explores why the myth has captured the British imagination across the centuries, and how it has impacted on popular culture. Tutankhamen was not the first curse story to emerge in British popular culture. This book uncovers the 'true' stories of two extraordinary Victorian gentlemen widely believed at the time to have been cursed by the artefacts they brought home from Egypt in the nineteenth century. These are weird and wonderful stories that weave together a cast of famous writers, painters, feted soldiers, lowly smugglers, respected men of science, disreputable society dames, and spooky spiritualists. Focusing on tales of the curse myth, Roger Luckhurst leads us through Victorian museums, international exhibitions, private collections, the battlefields of Egypt and Sudan, and the writings of figures like Arthur Conan Doyle, Rider Haggard and Algernon Blackwood. Written in an open and accessible style, this volume is the product of over ten years research in London's most curious archives. It explores how we became fascinated with Egypt and how this fascination was fuelled by myth, mystery, and rumour. Moreover, it provides a new and startling path through the cultural history of Victorian England and its colonial possessions.

The War On Witchcraft

by Jan Machielsen, release date 2021-06-30, The War On Witchcraft Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The War On Witchcraft books, Historians of the early modern witch-hunt often begin histories of their field with the theories propounded by Margaret Murray and Montague Summers in the 1920s. They overlook the lasting impact of nineteenth-century scholarship, in particular the contributions by two American historians, Andrew Dickson White (1832–1918) and George Lincoln Burr (1857–1938). Study of their work and scholarly personae contributes to our understanding of the deeply embedded popular understanding of the witch-hunt as representing an irrational past in opposition to an enlightened present. Yet the men's relationship with each other, and with witchcraft sceptics – the heroes of their studies – also demonstrates how their writings were part of a larger war against 'unreason'. This Element thus lays bare the ways scholarly masculinity helped shape witchcraft historiography, a field of study often seen as dominated by feminist scholarship. Such meditation on past practice may foster reflection on contemporary models of history writing.

When The Earth Shall Melt

by Sunil Solomon Ghazan, release date 2015-01-15, When The Earth Shall Melt Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download When The Earth Shall Melt books, The author is a poet a writer and a social activist who has written various essays, articles and books. Some of his well-known books on social issues include, A Tribute to the Prostitute (On sex workers) Because I am a girl child (on the girl child), Homes Aflame (on domestic violence), A Mute Refute (violence against women), Adults amused but Child Abused (On Child Abuse). The author has a number of poems dealing with nature, romance, and spirituality, some of which have been published in various leading magazines, while the rest are being compiled for publication. Have you ever imagined how the world would be when you and I would not exist on this planet apart from the future generation? As Christ put it, no one knows the day or the hour of the second coming. In whose time the prophetic visions would actualize is difficult to predict, but as the Spirit who has revealed these Prophetic Visions, to the author, he suggests that it will not be before 5050! The day, probably the fifth of May, 5050 would be when the whole globe has the same season because of the irresponsible way in which the caretakers, bring about an imbalance in the way nature controls the seasons. By then, it is estimated that different regions that enjoyed different climates would have the same, static very hot climate. The Sun would shine at its peak, melting the remaining snow on mountain tops, evaporating the sea waters, stopping the rains; in a nut shell the fiery heat would convert the planet into a furnace-drying all the water bodies, scorching trees and causing wild fires and thus the fertility of the soil would be lost leaving no scope for humanity and any creature to survive!
