Going With The Grain

by Mike Abbott, release date 2013-11-01, Going With The Grain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Going With The Grain books, This book is about how to make a chair - simply and with tools you can easily obtain or construct for yourself. In 1985, when Mike Abbott started running courses using the traditional tools and techniques of the Victorian chair-bodgers, many people said it was about time he moved into the 20th Century. Following the success of his first two books Green Woodwork and Living Wood, Mike’s third book shows that he has now moved happily and unashamedly straight into the 21st Century. With the help of over 600 colour photographs he guides you, step-by-step, through: The tools and techniques needed for cleaving, shaping and assembling a chair Constructing a few simply homemade devices to aid the process Making 3 stools and 3 chairs, each with its own unique character Going with the Grain is not written for cabinet-makers (although they are welcome to read it too) - the techniques described in this book have as much in common with cabinet-making, as does a jacket potato with haute cuisine. It is written for anyone who shares Mike’s passion for trees and wood and is interested in getting to know them better through the fulfilling process of turning a tree into their very own chair. This new second edition has been revised, based on feedback from readers and students in Mike's courses. Sections on drilling and steam-bending have been updated and all measurements are now given in inches as well as in metric units. The major changes are in the large chapter on seat-weaving, which now includes detailed instructions for three different patterns in Danish cord and fiber rush. There are also illustrations of over 20 variations in these and in other materials, many of which have never been published before.

Working With The Grain

by Brian Levy, release date 2014, Working With The Grain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Working With The Grain books, This book builds on cutting-edge scholarship and the author's quarter century of hands-on experience at the World Bank to lay out an innovative with-the-grain approach to integrating governance and growth - as a constructive, hopeful way of engaging the challenging governance ambiguities ofour early 21st century world.A "with the grain" perspective directs attention away from a "good governance" pre-occupation with off-the-shelf blueprints and optimal policies, and towards the challenges of initiating and sustaining forward development momentum. This altered angle of vision has powerful implications for how weunderstand and address the challenges of governance reform and development policymaking - both across countries and over time. The book distinguishes among four broad groups of countries - according to whether their policies are dominant or competitive, and whether their institutions are personalized or impersonal. It also distinguishes among alternative options for governance reform - "top down" options which aim tostrengthen formal institutions, and options which aim to support the emergence of "islands of effectiveness". And it explores the "goodness of fit" between alternative reform options and divergent country contexts - including how narrowly-focused initiatives can achieve results even in a broader seaof institutional dysfunction. The book examines how, over time, virtuous circles can link inclusive growth, positive expectations and ongoing institutional improvement. Taking the decade-or-so time horizon of practitioners, the aim is to nudge things along - seeking gains that initially may seem quite modest but can, sometimes, give rise to a cascading sequence of change for the better. Sometimes the binding constraint to forward movement can be institutional, making governance reform the priority; at other times, the priority can better be on inclusive growth. Over the longer-run, stability depends also on a broad-basedcommitment among citizens to the institutional order, as one which offers the hope of a better life for all.

Constitutional Review Under The Uk Human Rights Act

by Aileen Kavanagh, release date 2009-05-07, Constitutional Review Under The Uk Human Rights Act Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Constitutional Review Under The Uk Human Rights Act books, Under the Human Rights Act, British courts are for the first time empowered to review primary legislation for compliance with a codified set of fundamental rights. In this book, Aileen Kavanagh argues that the HRA gives judges strong powers of constitutional review, similar to those exercised by the courts under an entrenched Bill of Rights. The aim of the book is to subject the leading case-law under the HRA to critical scrutiny, whilst remaining sensitive to the deeper constitutional, political and theoretical questions which underpin it. Such questions include the idea of judicial deference, the constitutional status of the HRA, the principle of parliamentary sovereignty and the constitutional division of labour between Parliament and the courts. The book closes with a sustained defence of the legitimacy of constitutional review in a democracy, thus providing a powerful rejoinder to those who are sceptical about judicial power under the HRA.

Going With The Grain

by Susan Seligson, release date 2013-12-17, Going With The Grain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Going With The Grain books, "My lifelong love affair with bread has less to do with crust, crumb, and the vagaries of sourdough cultures and more to do with bread as a reflection of people's varied beliefs, daily lives, and blood memories....Bread tells the most essential human stories." So begins Susan Seligson's personal and often humorous journey to discover the secrets of the baker's trade and the place bread has in the lives of those who consume it. Part travelogue, part cultural history, with a handful of recipes thrown in for good measure, it is an exploration of the customs, traditions, and rituals around the creating and eating of this most basic and enduring form of sustenance. Bread is the stuff of life. Governments have been overthrown and religious rituals created because of it. Fry bread, matzo, ksra, nan, baguette: all are as resonant of their specific culture as any artifact. In Going with the Grain, Seligson wanders the streets of the Casbah in Fès, Morocco, to unlock the secrets of the thousand-year-old communal bakeries there. In Saratoga Springs, New York, she finds a bread maker so committed to making the ultimate loaf, he built a unique sixty-ton hearth and uses only certified biodynamically grown wheat. Seligson knelt in the Jordanian desert beside a woman turning flat breads over glowing embers and plumbed the mysteries of Wonder Bread in an aseptic American factory. As satisfying as a slice of good bread with butter, Going with the Grain is for the armchair traveler and armchair baker alike.

Going Against The Grain

by Ann S. Bayer, release date 2009-03-23, Going Against The Grain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Going Against The Grain books, This book is about passion, advocacy, and the willingness of parents to "go against the grain." It’s about Hawai‘i professionals choosing public education for their children in a state that adheres to a commonly held belief that "public schools are failing and private schools are succeeding." University of Hawai‘i education professor Ann Bayer interviewed fifty-one parents, including five who chose private schools. Physicians, professors, attorneys, military officers, teachers, legislators, business executives and entrepreneurs, bankers, and administrators of both genders and from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds were among those interviewed. Bayer begins by asking parents why they chose to send their children to public schools. She also asks them to describe the reaction of families, friends, and colleagues to their decision and their children’s school experiences—both positive and negative. From these conversations the concept of what constitutes a "good public school" emerges as well as the opportunities provided by such schools. Several parents remark that their children have gone on to attend the same colleges and universities as private school graduates. Other chapters examine more closely the prevalent belief in the superiority of Hawai‘i’s private schools and its impact on students, parents, and teachers. Bayer argues that it is important to understand this belief system and how both newcomers and longtime residents are exposed to it given its influence on parental decisions about schooling. Finally, she returns to interviews with parents for suggestions on how to improve public education in Hawai‘i and to address the question "Why should we care about the public school system?" Responses spark frank discussions on the broader implications for the civic and economic health of a community fragmented by two-tiered schooling. Candid and insightful, Going Against the Grain provides a much-needed look at education in Hawai‘i. It will be essential reading for parents, teachers, administrators, legislators, policy makers, and others interested in promoting and supporting public education and understanding its role in a democracy.

Trust In Mind

by Mu Soeng, release date 2013-02-08, Trust In Mind Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Trust In Mind books, "The Great Way is not difficult / for those who have no preferences. / When love and hate are both absent / everything becomes clear and undisguised. / Make the smallest distinction, however / and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart." So begins "Trust in Mind," the beloved poem that has again and again welcomed generations to their practice of Zen Buddhism. Traditionally attributed to the third Chinese ancestor of Zen (Sengcan, d. 606), it is often considered the first historical "Zen" document and remains an anchor of Zen Buddhist practice to this day. Here, scholar and commentator Mu Soeng explores the poem's importance and impact in three sections: The Dharma of Trust in Mind, The Tao of Trust in Mind, and The Chan of Trust in Mind. Finally, a brilliant line-by-line commentary brings the elements of this ancient work completely to life for the modern reader. Trust in Mind is the first book of its kind, looking at this very important Zen text from historical and cultural contexts, as well as from the practitioner's point of view. It is sure to interest readers of Mu Soeng and his fellow Buddhist contemporaries, as well as those with an interest in meditation and Eastern religions--most especially Zen practitioners, academics, philosophers, and scholars of Mind.
