The Life And Death Of The Radical Historical Jesus

by David Burns, release date 2013-01-03, The Life And Death Of The Radical Historical Jesus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Life And Death Of The Radical Historical Jesus books, In this cultural and intellectual history, David Burns contends that the influence of biblical criticism in America was more widespread than has been thought. Burns proves this point by uncovering the hidden history of the radical historical Jesus, a construct created and sustained by freethinkers, feminists, socialists, and anarchists during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. The result of this exploration is a new narrative revealing that Cyrenus Ward, Caroline Bartlett, George Herron, Bouck White, and other radical religionists had an impact on the history of religion in America rivaling that of recognized religious intellectuals such as Shailer Mathews, Charles Briggs, Francis Peabody, and Walter Rauschenbusch. The methods utilized by radical religionists were different from those employed by elite liberal divines, however, and part of a larger struggle over the relationship between religion and civilization. There were numerous reasons for this conflict, but Burns argues that the primary cause was that key radical religionists used Ernest Renan's The Life of Jesus to create an imaginative brand of biblical criticism that struck a balance between the demands of reason and the doctrines of religion. And this measured approach allowed Robert Ingersoll, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Eugene Debs, and other secular-minded thinkers who sought to purge Christianity of its supernatural dimensions to still find something wonderful in the religious imagination and make common cause with an ancient peasant from Galilee. This provocative blend of reason and religion produced a vibrant countercultural movement that spanned communities, classes, and creeds and makes The Life and Death of the Radical Historical Jesus a book that deserves a wide readership in an era when public intellectuals and politicians on both the left and right draw rigid lines between the secular and the sacred.

Download General Henry Lockwood Of Delaware books, Based on a treasure trove of newly discovered information, General Henry Lockwood of Delaware: Shipmate of Melville, Co-builder of the Naval Academy, Civil War Commander offers the first comparative study of Lockwood’s seminal influence on the emergence of the U.S. Naval Academy. Colonel Matthews shines new light on the Civil War commander, with a description of Lockwood’s duties during the Seminole Indian War, an analysis of Melville’s depiction of Professor Lockwood, a critical discussion of Alfred Thayer Mahan’s depiction of Lockwood, and a tactical reconstruction of Commodore Jones’s seizure of Monterey. Matthews inverts Lockwood's unjust historical reputation by offering a comprehensive defense of Lockwood’s actions at Cold Harbor and an unblinking exposé of the reprehensible conduct of corps commander Governor Warren in relieving him.

War Strategy And The Modern State 1792 1914

by Carl Cavanagh Hodge, release date 2016-11-25, War Strategy And The Modern State 1792 1914 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download War Strategy And The Modern State 1792 1914 books, This book is a comparative study of military operations conducted my modern states between the French Revolution and World War I. It examines the complex relationship between political purpose and strategy on the one hand, and the challenge of realizing strategic goals through military operations on the other. It argues further that following the experience of the Napoleonic Wars military strength was awarded a primary status in determining the comparative modernity of all the Great Powers; that military goals came progressively to distort a sober understanding of the national interest; that a genuinely political and diplomatic understanding of national strategy was lost; and that these developments collectively rendered the military and political catastrophe of 1914 not inevitable yet probable.

The Seaforth Bibliography

by Eugene Rasor, release date 2009-04-17, The Seaforth Bibliography Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Seaforth Bibliography books, This remarkable work is a comprehensive historiographical and bibliographical survey of the most important scholarly and printed materials about the naval and maritime history of England and Great Britain from the earliest times to 1815. More than 4,000 popular, standard and official histories, important articles in journals and periodicals, anthologies, conference, symposium and seminar papers, guides, documents and doctoral theses are covered so that the emphasis is the broadest possible. But the work is far, far more than a listing. The works are all evaluated, assessed and analysed and then integrated into an historical narrative that makes the book a hugely useful reference work for student, scholar, and enthusiast alike. It is divided into twenty-one chapters which cover resource centres, significant naval writers, pre-eminent and general histories, the chronological periods from Julius Caesar through the Vikings, Tudors and Stuarts to Nelson and Bligh, major naval personalities, warships, piracy, strategy and tactics, exploration, discovery and navigation, archaeology and even naval fiction. Quite simply, no-one with an interest and enthusiasm for naval history can afford to be without this book at their side.
