Readers And Reading

by Andrew Bennett, release date 2014-07-15, Readers And Reading Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Readers And Reading books, Much literary criticism focuses on literary producers and their products, but an important part of such work considers the end-user, the reader. It asks such questions as: how far can the author condition the response of the reader, and how much does the reader create the meaning of a text? Dr Bennett's collection includes important essays from such writers and critics as Wolfgang Iser, Mary Jacobus, Roger Chartier, Michel de Certeau, Shoshana Felman, Maurice Blanchot, Paul de Man and Yves Bonnefoy. It looks in turn at deconstructionist, feminist, new historicist and psychoanalytical response to the school. The book then considers the act of reading itself, discussing such issues as the uniqueness of any reading and the difficulties involved in its analysis.

by Mary Beth Beazley, release date 2018-08-22, Legal Writing For Legal Readers Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Legal Writing For Legal Readers books, Applying the perspective of the reader to the craft of writing, Legal Writing for Legal Readers: Predictive Writing for First-Year Students teaches the differences between strong and weak legal writing by letting students read examples of both. Students discover how productive it can be to read a well-articulated argument, as compared to one that is illogical. We aren’t always able to identify our own faults as writers—but as readers, we can see clearly the merits of both the argument and its presentation. The authors’ sidebars and annotations highlight why one writer fails while another succeeds. Students realize the significance of their own behavior as readers and how that behavior should dictate their writing decisions. As readers, students learn to recognize the specific elements of analysis and structure that make legal writing effective. As writers, they will make better and more informed choices, when they think about it from a reader’s perspective. New to the Second Edition: Revised to focus exclusively on predictive analytical writing that most law schools teach during the first semester of the first year Expanded inclusion of annotations and marginal notes that answer anticipated student questions Professors and students will benefit from: Extensive variety of samples and examples, both good and bad, selected to illustrate legal writing concepts for students Broad coverage that includes memos and briefs, as well as complaints, correspondence, and criminal motions Sidebar comments and marginal notes that answer anticipated student questions and define important legal and writing-related terms that may distract students as they learn new concepts Annotations that incorporate cognitive and behavioral theories to explain why some approaches work better than others Exercises that test students’ understanding of important concepts while they learn Teaching materials include: Additional exercises for use with most chapters Additional samples of longer documents Document to further illustrate important concepts for both teachers and students

by Randall Stevenson, release date 1993-01-01, A Reader S Guide To The Twentieth Century Novel In Britain Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Reader S Guide To The Twentieth Century Novel In Britain books, The novel is the major literary phenomenon of the twentieth century, and its development in Britain since 1900 has reflected the tumultuous changes that have characterized modern society. Randall Stevenson now presents an accessible and authoritative guide to the work of th ecentury's leading novelists as well as many of its lesser known writers. In this stimulating and wide-ranging account, Stevenson locates the work of individual writers, from Conrad to Jeanette Winterson, within an evolving literary history and the wider context of social, political, and cultural change. Included are British writers working in exile and writers with origins elsewhere, such as James and Rushdie, who have chosen to work in Britain. Women novelists are accorded their rightful prominence. This clear and lively survey deals with a broad range of movements, including modernism and postmodernism, as well as the influence of other world literatures and the impact of two world wars. An ideal text, this is a 'guide' in the best sense—concise and lucid, well-informed and perceptive. Readers new to the field will appreciate Stevenson's clear direction, while the experienced will be delighted by newly revealed connections and fresh perspectives.

The Reader S Repentance

by Christine L. Krueger, release date 1992-01-15, The Reader S Repentance Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Reader S Repentance books, "A woman preaching is like a dog walking on its hind legs," Dr. Johnson pronounced. "It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all." The prejudice embodied in this remark has persisted over time, impeding any proper assessment of the female preaching tradition and its role in shaping social and literary discourse. The Reader's Repentance recovers this tradition, and in doing so revises the history of nineteenth-century women's writing. Christine L. Krueger persuasively argues that Evangelical Christianity, by assuming the spiritual equality of women and men and the moral superiority of middle-class women, opened a space for the linguistic empowerment of women and fostered the emergence of women orators and writers who, in complex and contradictory ways, became powerful public figures. In the light of unpublished or long out-of-print writing by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century women preachers, Krueger shows how these women drew on religious language to critique forms of male domination, promote female political power, establish communities of women, and, most significantly, feminize social discourse. She traces the legacy of these preachers through the work of writers as diverse as Hannah More, Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, Elizabeth Gaskell, and George Eliot—women who, despite political differences, shared an evangelical strategy for placing women's concerns on the social agenda of their time. Documenting and analyzing the tradition of women's preaching as a powerful and distinctly feminist force in the development of nineteenth-century social fiction, The Reader's Repentance reconstitutes a significant chapter in the history of women and culture. This original work will be of interest to students of women's history, literature, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century society.

The Reader S Guide To The Talmud

by Jacob Neusner, release date 2001, The Reader S Guide To The Talmud Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Reader S Guide To The Talmud books, This systematic introduction to the Talmud of Babylonia (Bavli) answers basic questions of form: how is this a coherent document? How do we make sense of the several languages in which it is written? What are the principal parts of the complex writing? Turning to questions of modes of thought, the account proceeds to address the intellectual character of the Bavli and in particular the character and uses of its dialectics. Finally, questions of substance come to the fore: how does the Talmud relate to the Torah? and how does tradition enter in? These basic questions of rhetoric, topic, and logic that anyone approaching the text will raise are dealt with clearly and authoritatively.
