There S A Golden Sky

by Ian Ridley, release date 2011-10-01, There S A Golden Sky Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download There S A Golden Sky books, With 2011 celebrating the Premier League's 20th anniversary, it's time to take stock of a phenomenon that has changed English football - and English society - forever. Ian Ridley took a long hard look at the game back in the 1980s against a backdrop of recession, strikes and football hooliganism. In this new book he examines just how far the game has come, sucking in players and money from around the globe and providing fame, fortune and hours of pleasure in return. It includes: - Interviews with major players such as the chairman of the FA, top-flight managers, and the broker who sold Chelsea to Abramovich. - A behind-the-scenes look at clubs such as Fulham and Manchester United, as well as roles within football like refereeing. - An exploration of the finances of the game, its changing profile and the growing gap between the Premier League and the rest of the game. As he examines the changes that have occurred over the last twenty years, Ridley seeks to discover if the soul of the game still exists. With his eye for detail, his knack for voices and his incisive intelligence, he has woven together a rich and fascinating story of football's metamorphosis from social outcast to favourite child.

From The Back Page To The Front Room

by Roger Domeneghetti, release date 2014-11-27, From The Back Page To The Front Room Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download From The Back Page To The Front Room books, "e;The media dominates our lives. Sport dominates the media. Football dominates the sports media."e; If we're not watching the beautiful game on television, then we're listening to it on the radio. If we're not reading about it, then we're tweeting about it. If we're not betting in-play, then we're pretending to be football managers. We can access goals from every corner of the globe whenever and wherever we want, yet by comparison few of us watch a match live. From the Back Page to the Front Room explains how football and the media have become indistinguishable, fundamentally altering fans' relationship with the game in the process. Starting in the days of folk football, Roger Domeneghetti traces the sport's journey through early newspapers, radio, newsreels, the growth of televised football and on into the internet age. Along the way he explores the impact this powerful partnership has had on our culture and society. Based on exhaustive research and exclusive interviews with key figures including Greg Dyke, Henry Winter, Jacqui Oatley, Jonathan Wilson and Hope Powell, From the Back Page to the Front Room is a fascinating account of how football and the media helped each other dominate modern life. It is also a window into a world where we can now watch on our phones what once barely merited a few lines in the Press.

On July 14th, 1966, Richard Franklin Speck swept through several student nurses’ townhouse like a summer tornado and changed the landscape of American crime. He broke in as his helpless victims slept, bound them one by one, and then stabbed, assaulted, and strangled all eight in a sadistic sexual frenzy. By morning, only one young nurse had miraculously survived. The killer was captured in seventy-two hours; he was successfully prosecuted in an error-free trial that stood up to appellate scrutiny; and the jury needed only forty-nine minutes to return a death verdict. Here is the story of Richard Speck by the prosecutor who put him in prison for life with a brand new introduction by Bill Kunkle, the prosecutor of the infamous John Wayne Gacy Jr. In The Crime of the Century, William J. Martin has teamed up with Dennis L. Breo to re-create the blood-soaked night that made American criminal history, offering fascinating behind-the-scenes descriptions of Speck, his innocent victims, the desperate manhunt and massive investigation, and the trial that led to Speck’s successful conviction.

Lost

by Anthony Carragher, release date 2017-10-10, Lost Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Lost books, As Liverpool F.C. reach their 125th anniversary, amidst the celebrations, doubts persist. Are they still elite? Can their prolonged title drought be ended? Foreign owners say they came to win but the trophy cabinet lies bare. Where to next for the reds? Lost? explores the gloried past, the moneyed present and the uncertain future of both Liverpool F.C. and the English game at large. Have they lost their way? Liverpool F.C.’s most famous manager, Bill Shankly, declared that the club ‘exists to win trophies’ and for many years this maxim proved true, as Liverpool became one of the most successful clubs in European football and dominated the scene in England for over two decades. Yet recently, the victories have dried up and Liverpool have not won the league title in over a quarter of a century. Football is also in a state of flux as major TV deals have made the Premier league the wealthiest in the world, but the gap between the elite clubs and those striving to catch up widens. Has the game lost it’s soul? Who will rise and who will fall as a new uncharted era in football unfolds? Lost? captures exclusive interviews with key figures including former Liverpool managers, Brendan Rogers and Roy Evans, the Shankly family and a whole host of footballing legends, past and present. The book also includes reflective pieces on an array of Premier League clubs from both a sporting and cultural perspective, looking not just at the team in isolations, but also at the communities and landscapes that shape them

I Ll Never Walk Alone

by Gerry Marsden, release date 2021-01-18, I Ll Never Walk Alone Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download I Ll Never Walk Alone books, In 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers made pop-music history. Their first three singles, “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It” and “You'll Never Walk Alone”, went to the top of the UK charts, creating a still-unbeaten record. For twenty-year-old Gerry Marsden it was the start of a long and colourful show-business career. A pioneer of the Liverpool pop explosion that reverberated around the world, he vowed to broaden his horizons and stay on stage for the rest of his life. Brought up in the tough Dingle district of Liverpool, Marsden was a street fighter and enthusiastic boxer, who left school at the age of fifteen to work as a railways delivery boy. Like thousands of teenagers in the 1950s he got the music bug, taught himself guitar, formed a group and joined the vibrant club circuit alongside the Beatles and hundreds of other young rock 'n' rollers. In 1962, Gerry and the Pacemakers were signed by manager Brian Epstein as his second group after the Beatles, and made their name with ballads like “Ferry Cross the Mersey” and “Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying” as well as raunchy pop. But it was a Rodgers & Hammerstein song, “You'll Never Walk Alone”, which had enthralled Marsden since he saw the film Carousel in his youth, that was their biggest hit. For three decades it has remained the anthem of the crowds at Liverpool Football Club, played before kick-off every Saturday, inscribed on the club gates and always the most popular concert request. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, Marsden released a version of “I'll Never Walk Alone” in tribute to the National Health Service. In this autobiography, reissued following his death in January 2021, Gerry Marsden emerges as a driven man, an artist with enormous confidence and a unique spirit. From his streetwise boyhood and early love of music to his friendship – and keen rivalry – with the Beatles, hunger for fame and hard-won success, his story is one of grit, warmth, humour and determination.
