How To Revise A True War Story

by John K. Young, release date 2017-01-15, How To Revise A True War Story Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download How To Revise A True War Story books, “You can tell a true war story if you just keep on telling it,” Tim O’Brien writes in The Things They Carried. Widely regarded as the most important novelist to come out of the American war in Viet Nam, O’Brien has kept on telling true war stories not only in narratives that cycle through multiple fictional and non-fictional versions of the war’s defining experiences, but also by rewriting those stories again and again. Key moments of revision extend from early drafts, to the initial appearance of selected chapters in magazines, across typescripts and page proofs for first editions, and through continuing post-publication variants in reprints. How to Revise a True War Story is the first book-length study of O’Brien’s archival papers at the University of Texas’s Harry Ransom Center. Drawing on extensive study of drafts and other prepublication materials, as well as the multiple published versions of O’Brien’s works, John K. Young tells the untold stories behind the production of such key texts as Going After Cacciato, The Things They Carried, and In the Lake of the Woods. By reading not just the texts that have been published, but also the versions they could have been, Young demonstrates the important choices O’Brien and his editors have made about how to represent the traumas of the war in Viet Nam. The result is a series of texts that refuse to settle into a finished or stable form, just as the stories they present insist on being told and retold in new and changing ways. In their lack of textual stability, these variants across different versions enact for O’Brien’s readers the kinds of narrative volatility that is key to the American literature emerging from the war in Viet Nam. Perhaps in this case, you can tell a true war story if you just keep on revising it.

by Mary Kandiuk, release date 2007, Caribbean And South Asian Writers In Canada Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Caribbean And South Asian Writers In Canada books, This is the first bibliography of both new and established Caribbean and South Asian writers living in Canada. The writers included in this volume are responsible for some of the most interesting writing coming out of Canada today. While the work of these writers is attracting worldwide attention and acclaim, literary criticism relating to their work is often scarce and difficult to locate. By citing critical source material on the works of these 27 significant poets, novelists, and dramatists, Caribbean and South Asian Writers in Canada fills a gap in existing bibliographical tools. The figures included in this bibliography are celebrated established authors such as Austin C. Clarke, Bharati Mukherjee and Michael Ondaatje, as well as exciting newcomers like Dionne Brand, Marlene Nourbese Philip, and Rohinton Mistry. Each section begins with a brief biography of the author followed by a bibliography of his or her works. Following the primary bibliography is a listing of secondary criticism in English. Secondary sources include books, parts of books, periodical articles, book reviews, and dissertations. The bibliography also includes extensive listings of secondary criticism for materials not indexed elsewhere, and brief annotations are provided to indicate the subject matter of the work. Caribbean and South Asian Writers in Canada will meet the needs of students and scholars around the world exploring an exciting new chapter in Canadian Literature.

Mark My Words

by Lee Clark Mitchell, release date 2020-05-14, Mark My Words Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Mark My Words books, Why are Emily Dickinson and Henry James drawn habitually to dashes? What makes James Baldwin such a fan of commas, which William Carlos Williams tends to ignore? And why do that odd couple, the novelist Virginia Woolf and the short story specialist Andre Dubus II, both embrace semicolons, while E. E. Cummings and Nikki Giovanni forego punctuation entirely? More generally, what effect do such nonverbal marks (or their absence) have on an author's encompassing vision? The first book on modern literature to compare writers' punctuation, and to show how fully typographical marks alter our sense of authorial style, Mark My Words offers new ways of reading some of our most important and beloved writers as well as suggesting a fresh perspective on literary style itself.
